Managing resources for compliance & growth

Soil Moisture Probe

Aquaflex is robust, accurate and provides information in a concise and easy to interpret format so the grower can make irrigation decisions that increase water use efficiency.
AQUAFLEX has allowed us to achieve greater efficiency in our irrigation management. The result is a more sustainable and profitable business” - Jilly Reesby, Research Technician Manager, Synlait Limited

AQUAFLEX SOIL MOISTURE SENSORS are a vital part of any irrigation system and are ideally suited to Cropping, Pasture and Horticultural applications. Aquaflex provides accurate and concise information allowing informed Irrigation Management Decisions to be made. Control your soil moisture to optimum levels to:

  • Enhance pasture quality
  • Increase production
  • Save energy & water
  • Reduce nutrient leaching
  • Save & increase effectiveness of fertilisers
  • Save time & reduce labour costs
  • Reduce water management risk
  • Demonstrate quality environmental management

How the soil moisture probe works

The AQUAFLEX soil moisture probe uses a process called Time Domain Transmission (TDT). An electrical pulse is sent along a transmission line, which is embedded within the AQUAFLEX sensor, and the electrical field around the transmission line interacts with the surrounding medium. The speed and shape of this pulse is affected by the dielectric properties of the medium. Water has a much higher dielectric constant than most materials that constitute soil, so the presence of water has a profound impact on the electrical signal. This factor enables a soil moisture probe to measure moisture content.

AQUACOM DATA LOGGING & TELEMETRY SYSTEM provides a complete Telemetry Infrastructure to provide a Total Irrigation Management and ECan Compliance data. It collects and records the following data (if connected) and transmits this back to the Base Station PC (and from there to the Hydrological Data and Compliance system).:

  • Soil moisture
  • Soil temperature
  • Flow rate & volume
  • Rainfall
  • Air temperature
  • Pump status
  • Pond or well water levels

Using free radio links and existing internet connections there are no ongoing cellular charges for transferring data. Being able to access all the above data in a timely fashion allows growers to make immediate Irrigation Management decisions.
Our radio-linked AQUAFLEX system gives us up to the minute monitoring of Soil Moisture and Soil Temperature. This season with the AQUAFLEX we have grown more grass with periods of over 90 kg/day because we could manage our water levels to match demand. The system has also helped us towards achieving our goal of increased water use efficiency.- Peter Hancox, Lincoln University Dairy Farm Manager
